Elsevier Article Service
What is the Elsevier Article Service?
Elsevier is a leading publisher of scholarly journals, primarily in the sciences. If we were to subscribe to each of the 3,800 journals in the Elsevier Science Direct database, the cost would be prohibitive. So, the librarians decided to implement the Elsevier Article Service, a document delivery service that provides access to most of the journals for a per article cost of $24. The download fee is paid by the library.
The Hekman Library was able to offer access to millions of journal articles by canceling nearly fifty Elsevier journals when we initiated the service in 2009. The recovered money was used to start the service. We have discovered over a seven-year period that the cost has never exceeded the subscription cost of the canceled journals.
We are pleased to demonstrate, yet again, that we are good stewards of our budget dollars.
