MLA citation format for music research

Here are some examples from the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th edition, for you to follow.

A Sound Recording:

  • A performing group:

Kronos Quartet. Nuevo. Nonesuch, 2002.

  • A single performer:

Marsalis, Branford. Creation. Orpheus Chamber Orch. Sony, 2001.

  • A specific song:

Bono, Brian Eno, the Edge, and Luciano Pavarotti. "Miss Sarajevo." Pavarotti and Friends for the Children of Bosnia. London, 1996.

A Film or Video Recording:

Like Water for Chocolate [Como agua para chocolate]. Screenplay by Laura Esquivel. Dir. Alfonso Arau. Perf. Lumi Cavazos, Marco Lombardi, and Regina Torne. Miramax, 1993.

Cite a videocassette or a DVD like a film, but include the original release date (if relevant) and the medium, neither underlined nor enclosed in quotation marks, before the name of the distributor:

Mifune, Toshiro, perf. Rashomon. Dir. Akira Kurosawa. 1950. Videocassette. Home Vision, 2001.

A musical composition:

Berlioz, Hector. Symphonie fantastique, op. 14.
