November Is Native American Heritage Month

November Is Native American Heritage Month

During Native American Heritage Month, we  explore the heritage, culture, and experience of Indigenous peoples, both historically and in American life today.

Native Land Digital, a Canadian not-for-profit organization incorporated in December 2018, maps Indigenous lands in a way that changes and challenges the way people see history and the present day. It is Indigenous-led, with an Indigenous Executive Director and Board of Directors who oversee and direct the organization.

One of the key projects of this organization is an interactive map. The map demonstrates that "we are all on native land." Which tribal lands do we occupy here in West Michigan? Primarily Odawa, Peoria, and Potawatomi. Check out your own home area on the map and see which tribal land your family occupies.

Resources on the site include territory acknowledgements (often done at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, or any public event), teachers guides, mobile apps, and territories, languages, and treaties lists.
