Ukraine's Librarians Hard at Work
Libraries of all kinds are places for the public to go to find the latest book by a favorite author, get help for a research project, or simply enjoy a quiet space to read. Not so anymore for Ukraine's libraries since Russia invaded.
Now, libraries that are still relatively undamaged are providing shelter to refugees, books for children and adults, specialists to help people struggling with mental health, and material for creating camouflage nets! They also continue to provide accurate information to combat the flood of disinformation, which is a value that all libraries worldwide share.
Last week, the Ukrainian Library Association should have kicked off its international scientific conference, “Modern Library-Information Continuous Education: What, How, for Whom?” Instead, the organizing committee was forced to cancel. In a statement (translated), the association said “…The Organizing Committee of the Conference has decided to hold the Conference after our confident victory, and the contributions collected to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We promise to provide complete and quality service to all participants in the peaceful time."
The American Librarian Association issued a statement on March 1 declaring that it "stands with the Ukrainian Library community." The Association of Research Libraries also published a Statement on Ukraine.
