The month of February marks the celebration of Black History Month in the United States. The virtual events scheduled focus on the theme of Black Health and Wellness. This theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well. Some featured newer books on this theme from our collection:

• Reproductive Injustice: Racism, Pregnancy, and Premature Birth: explores the issues of racism, medicine, and motherhood
• Caring for Equality: a History of African American Health and Healthcare: chronicles the struggle by African Americans to improve poor health conditions and inadequate medical care
• Diversifying STEM: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Race and Gender: helps readers to reimagine STEM across a variety of educational paradigms, perspectives, and disciplines

Hekman Library is playing an active role in the celebration. On Saturday, Feb. 12, from 7 - 9 p.m., the library hosted student poets for a Poetry Jam. We also have several displays, one which features famous African-American authors and artists and one which showcases books from our collection written by Blacks.
