Hekman Marks Hispanic Heritage Month

Hekman Marks Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off on Sept 15, the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries.

For this national celebration, we come together to honor the rich history and diversity of Hispanic and Latinx communities. Learn along with us this month by checking out our Diversity Readings guide at https://libguides.calvin.edu/diversity/sept-oct-hispanic-heritage. We're also spotlighting our Children's Literature collection with special selections for Hispanic Heritage month, so check out our display on the main floor of Hekman Library.

Here's a sampling of some of the books featured in the Diversity Readings guide:

  • Turning Pages, a biography for children by the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor
  • El Norte, about the Hipanic past of the United States, which predates the Pilgrims
  • How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents: four sisters from the Dominican Republic come of age in the United States
  • Kids at Work: case studies of Latinx families selling food on the streets of L.A.
