Where to Go for General Information
Gale eBooks is a collection of books on all subjects; some of them are reference books. These are books that give you a general introduction to a subject, like encyclopedias and dictionaries. They are good places to start your research, particularly if you don't know very much about a subject.
Here are a few ways to find reference books within the Gale Ebooks collection:
- Do an advanced search and search for publication title in the drop-down menu. Type the word "encyclopedia" in the search box. Some results: Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (2019) and African American Culture: an encyclopedia of people, traditions and customs (2020).
- Do a basic search for a subject of your choice, such as racism. Once you get your results, you can limit to Document Type "Topic overview." Some recent titles: Race and Sports: a reference handbook (2021) and Race in American Film (2017).
(Note, these links will only work for Calvin students, faculty, and staff).
