Paul Fields Retires
Paul Fields has been a theological librarian at Hekman Library and Curator of the Meeter Center for Calvin Studies for 30 years. Students and colleagues highlight Paul's deep and broad knowledge of John Calvin and the Reformation, his joy in helping seminary and university students with research of all kinds, and his calmness and patience.
Jul Medenblik, president of Calvin Seminary, remembers consulting with Paul for a paper on John Calvin when Jul was a student, and still today he recalls with appreciation Paul's encouragement and scholarly guidance. The study tables outside Paul’s office have been the site of many conversations with students and colleagues about their challenges, hopes, and joys, encouraged by Paul’s attentive listening and pragmatic good sense.
The library staff will miss Paul's consistent presence but are glad that he will continue his curator work for several days per week.
When Paul is asked about one piece of advice he'd give to the students he's helped through the years he says, "Proverbs 3:5-6 – 'Serve the Lord with all your heart…' Much will fall into place when you take your eyes off yourself."
