Marilynne Robinson's Gilead Series
American author and self-proclaimed Calvinist, Marilynne Robinson, has recently added to her" Gilead Series" with novel #4, titled Jack. It is meeting with enthusiastic acclaim, as have the earlier novels Gilead, Lila, and Home. In fact, the "Gilead Series" is the latest Oprah Book Club selection.
Marilynne Robinson has been a featured speaker at previous Festivals of Faith and Writing at Calvin University. In 2006, Andy Crouch had a conversation with Robinson that you can still listen to on the Festival's Rewrite Radio podcast. In October of 2020, an interview was conducted with Robinson by Rhonda Douglas of the Ottawa International Writer's Festival. The focus of the conversation was the novel Jack.
The best way to learn about Marilynne Robinson's theology is, of course, to read her books - both fiction and nonfiction. In her fiction, the main characters struggle with their faith, have doubts about God's existence, and often do not find peace. And yet, the books testify to the presence of God's grace in their lives.
