Introducing the Cochrane Database

Introducing the Cochrane Database

Cochrane is a not-for-profit organization and only collaborates with organizations that are free from commercial interest. Much of the evidence we have in the healthcare field is from pharmaceutical companies, (if we're talking about drug treatments), and device manufacturers, (if we're talking about medical devices). They naturally have a vested interest in test results. It's important to look at the evidence from the outside to quality assess it and summarize it. That's what the Cochrane Library does. At a time such as now, when pseudo-science and outright lies are rampant concerning COVID-19, we need information sources that healthcare professionals, researchers, educators and laypersons can rely on.

Some facts:

  • 80% of World Health Organization guidelines use Cochrane Reviews
  • The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is the most referenced health journal on
    Wikipedia
  • There is a Spanish language version of the Cochrane Library
  • Cochrane has approximately 30,000 review experts from around the world

The Cochrane Library was purchased primarily to support the nursing program at Calvin, but it also supports student research in pre-med, public health, kinesiology, speech pathology, psychology and global development studies.
