Book Spine Poems

Our library staff are composing simple poems by using book spines from books they have at home. The one you see on the right was composed by Acquisitions Librarian, Katherine Swart.

Some others:

"by flickering torchlight/I tramp through SWAMP AND BOG/HERE I AM after/ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE/eternally encountering EVIDENCE/strewn by SECRET SOCIETIES/netherly within NINTH HOUSE/hidden from humanity/RUMORS OF ANOTHER WORLD/complicit" (Vicki Hedgecock, Cataloging Specialist).

"RELISH/OLD FRIENDS AND NEW FANCIES/COMFORT AND JOY/AS OLD AS TIME" (Amanda Matthysse, Student Learning Librarian)

See what you have on your shelves at home and make a book spines poem. Take a picture and post your own poem in Instagram. Make sure you tag Hekman Library, so we can see.
