It's a tradition. Most years, going back at least as far as the late 1960s, the Chimes staff has produced a spoof issue. (Chimes is Calvin University's student newspaper). They are filled with wit and biting sarcasm, as one would imagine.

The Denominational Enquirer ("largest circulation of any paper at Calvin College") appeared on March 29, 1984. Headline: "Our child is a puppy!" with a photo of art professor Edgar Boeve snuggling with his big poodle.

Whines was published on March 28, 1985. An article on the front page is about library director Marvin "The Enforcer" Monksma (Monsma) executing talkers in the library. He quips, "Let this be a sign to all!"

More recently, a spoof from 2007 was in the style of choose-your-own-adventure and sported the title "Discern Your Own Adventure: A Calvinite Quest." 

A favorite of librarians at Hekman is the May 12, 1999 issue with a cover image of retired librarian Conrad Bult and the headline "Bult Finds Book." There's an article inside about "Bult: the Man, the Myth, the Legend." It describes how the mythic Bult found what is believed to be the earliest version of John Calvin's Institutes. (Bult is shown excitedly reading The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes). 

The tradition lives on. Chimes staff produced a spoof issue on April 1, 2019, The Kazoo, with front-page headlines: "Bookstore to start selling engagment rings," and "Student Union plans to feature full-fledged waterpark."
