Writing Co-op Work on Conflict Over Federal Lands
Professor James (Jamie) Skillen of the GEO Department has been working on a book that will be published in 2020 with the working title This Land Is Your Land. This writing project comes out of his Sabbatical work (Fall 2017) on the subject of U.S. federal lands. It deals with waves of conflict, ranging from mainstream political conflict to armed seizure of public lands, (e.g., the Sagebrush Rebellion, the Bundy Ranch standoff, and more recently the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge). Skillen says three distinct periods of unrest can be defined: 1979-1982, the 1990s, and the years of the Obama administration.
Skillen has also become interested, as he's delved deeper into this subject, in conservative Christian and quasi-Christian support for "patriot" militia groups and what this means for conservative politics in the future.
