Artist and Professor Dies

Edgar Boevé, the "Face of Art” for Calvin College for more than 30 years, (1958 to 1991), died on March 5. Professor Boevé created religious art for over 70 years, using a variety of mediums. His distinctive artwork has been commissioned for Christian high schools and churches, as well as displayed in numerous art galleries.

His birds of the Bible series, 13" X 13" paintings on gold leaf, trace the biblical story from creation to the fall, to God's provision for redemption. This series of paintings is hanging in the Children's Literature area on the library's 5th floor. Each painting is based on a Bible verse. For example, the one you see here of the singing birds praising, is based on Psalm 104:12: "The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among the branches."

Read more about the broad and deep influence of Edgar Boevé in this tribute: "An Artful Life: Remembering Edgar Boeve." There will be a service of remembrance and thanksgiving in the college chapel on Saturday April 27, 1 p.m.
