Playing Games in Class With Librarians
OK, so what's this all about?! Librarians playing games with FIT students?
FIT is a course that all students have to take, usually in their first semester at the college. It stands for Foundations of Information Technology. Sarah Kolk, Instruction Librarian, and Amanda Matthysse, Librarian for Student Learning, decided to play a game with the class to help them become more familiar with library research concepts. They divided the class into teams of 3 or 4 and played Search & Destroy, a game for library geeks. The game introduces students to database use, Boolean searching, keyword search development, materials identification, and peer-review concepts. And it does all this in a fun, competitive way!
Search & Destroy was created by Mari Kermit-Canfield and Gary Maixner, both on the library staff of Ferris State University.
