Newbery Honor Book with a Calvin Connection
Echo is the story of three interconnected children's lives - children growing up during the years leading up to World War II. Friedrich is a German child, and the author, Pam Muñoz Ryan used Calvin Professor (emeritus) Randy Bytwerk's German Propaganda Archive as a research aid in Friedrich's story. In her acknowledments she thanks Calvin College and Bytwerk's archive.
One of the "characters" in the book is a magical harmonica. The author says, "Read Echo to find out how all these stories are connected, and how the mysterious power of a harmonica leads to...an improbable, real-life miracle."
