Banned Books Week Defends the Right to Read
Banned Books Week is Sept. 22-28 and its theme this year is "Censorship leaves us in the dark; keep the light on."
Some of the top challenged books from the past year:
- George written by Alex Gino, for including a transgender character.
- The Captain Underpants series for encouraging disruptive behavior. Hekman has two in the series: The Adventures of Captain Underpants and Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets.
- The Hate U Give, a young adult novel by Angie Thomas banned in school libraries and curriculums because it was considered “pervasively vulgar” and because of drug use, profanity, and offensive language. This was in the top list last year, too.
- This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki, for profanity and sexual references
These are all owned by the Hekman Library. Follow the links for call numbers and to see if they are available. You may notice that several on the list are graphic novels. Hekman has a large graphic novels collection on the 3rd floor.
