Politicians Caricatured
Here's a reminder that over the years we’ve had a lot of cartoon characters running for President of the United States. On the right is a cover from the magazine Judge, September 19, 1896, just prior to the presidential election between Democrat William Jennings Bryan and Republican William McKinley.
The caption reads: “The Sacrilegious Candidate – No man who drags into the dust the most sacred symbols of the Christian world is fit to be president of the United States,” with reference to Bryan’s “Cross of Gold/Crown of Thorns” theme and prolific use of biblical allusions in his campaign.
"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NIV)
The Hekman Library has many books (over 300!) about U.S. presidential campaigns through the decades, starting with the late 1800s through to 2015.(Subject heading: Presidents--United States--Election).
