Where did these familiar words and phrases originate? When were they first used? OED editors suspect that the information they have is not complete. For example, the word "cooties" used by North American children in the 1960s...Was the first instance in a novel by Beverly Cleary in 1967? The editors of the OED suspect not. So, they are asking for members of the public to help in the OED Appeals effort. Find out more about the appeals and see if you can help out!
