Did you know that Hekman Library has an extensive graphic novel collection? Why would an academic library need a collection of “comic books”?

Hekman Library boasts a collection of around 400 graphic novels located across from the recreational reading section on the third floor. We are constantly updating our collection with award-winners and popular series alike, such the 2013 Eisner Comic Industry Award winner Building Stories by Chris Ware.

But why should you care? On the one hand, graphic novels are increasingly popular as recreational reading. Our collection includes series like Fullmetal Alchemist that have topped manga* bestseller lists since 2000. In the snippets of time between tests, papers, and classes, students can relieve a little stress by picking up a copy and losing themselves in the fast-paced and easy-to-read stories.

Not only are graphic novels fun to read, they are useful educational tools. Have you ever been completely lost trying to decipher a textbook’s wordy explanation of a concept, only to find the diagram on the next page makes everything perfectly clear? If you are a visual learner, a graphic novel on the topic you’re studying could be just what you need. Reading the library’s copy of Graphic Shakespeare: King Lear before, after, or along with your study of Shakespeare’s play allows you to visualize and more fully understand the work. Graphic novel adaptations engage difficult works and concepts in a fun and modern way that is appealing to students.
