Cayvan Blu-Ray Survey
Hekman Library staff keep their eyes open for new media formats and want to be sensitive to users' needs and preferences in that regard. We already have two Blu-ray players in Cayvan Recorded Media.
The Cayvan staff conducted a survey from November 13 to December 7 of this year to find out from our community what media format they prefer. We received nearly 100 responses from students, faculty, and staff.
The questions asked on the survey:
1. How often do you watch movies in general? (45% regularly; 24% rarely)
2. Do you prefer movies in DVD or Blu-ray format? (66% DVD; 19% Blu-ray)
3. Do you own a Blu-ray player? (24% yes; 76% no)
4. Would you ever come to Cayvan to watch a movie on Blu-ray? (32% yes; 56% no)
We will be adding a third Blu-ray player in Cayvan next year. Faculty continue to make recommendations for purchase, and they have increasingly been asking for Blu-ray. Blu-ray technology is an improvement over DVD in terms of image and sound quality and special features. However, we don't want to invest a lot of money in a technology that will soon be superseded by yet another break-through. This is a constant "balancing act" for library staff as we look to the future!
