Jacque Rhodes, former Assistant Dean of Multicultural Student Development, pioneered UnLearn week in 2002, and it's become a long-standing tradition. The goal of UnLearn Week is to provide a safe campus-wide forum for conversations designed to unlearn stereotypes, biases, and racism. Khayree Williams, Assistant Dean for Multicultural Student Development, says,“Talking about race, talking about diversity, oftentimes it can be very uncomfortable. No one wants to say the wrong thing, so a lot of times what happens is instead of engaging in those conversations, we shy away from them. But it’s OK to talk about these things here at Calvin. We want to create a community where all students feel a sense of belonging." 

Several reports and documents that help Calvin University to chart its progress in regard to anti-racism and diversity are FEN [From Every Nation], Diversity and Inclusion Project (final report), and the university's Strategic Plan.

The library is committed to partnering with other departments and offices around campus to help the community unlearn. Sarah Kolk, Instruction Librarian, participated in a panel discussion on diversity in children's literature on October 8. She was joined by several public librarians from the area and by two Calvin professors, Linda Naranjo-Huebl and Nalova Westbrook.
