Library Response to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As Hekman Library continues to operate in light of the physical closure of libraries by Michigan's Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, we want to continue to ensure "the health, safety, and well-being of every member of the Calvin community" and to take "actions that aim to limit exposure of Calvin community members to the [corona] virus." As Calvin University and Calvin Seminary delivers all courses online, the library will continue its core functions to provide access to research assistance and information literacy instruction.

Online Research Assistance and Library Support

As students and faculty work from off-campus, Hekman Library is directing our users to our digital resources. We have created research guides that highlight the existing tools and focus on major platforms to encourage wide access. We encourage students to seek research support via text, chat, email, or synchronous video for one-on-one coaching sessions, or through Moodle or Canvas course pages. We also have expanded our online chat service with additional chat queues for specialized library-related functions, such as the Meeter Center and for the seminary.

A new research guide is available specifically to help faculty and students locate online resources. Instructional videos and how-to guides are available through YouTube.

Access to Physical Resources

Physical resources within the library are not available during this closure. Book requests for pickup is no longer available; MeL and ILL item requests for physical items (books, audiovisual, and microforms) are similarly on hold at this time. ILL for online articles or other electronic resources continues.

For Hekman material currently checked out, all due dates have been extended; patrons have the option to keep their materials until the library is opened again or return through the library dropbox anytime (located just inside the main doors). No late fees will be exacted this semester. For further questions and concerns, contact

Since Calvin's education work continues, the library staff are ready to help library users and are working to meet the demand for services in our expanded online environment and to our distributed learners.

Hekman Library will continue posting details of our operations on the library website, library entrances, and will also send campus-wide emails as appropriate. More deliberate communication is being directed to specific user populations, such as seminary students or faculty to ensure an understanding of the library's resources. As the campus situation changes these plans may be subject to change.
